The Brooklyn-based theatre company, Woodshed Collective (woodshedcollective.com), will present the premiere of Caridad Svich’s Twelve Ophelias, directed by Teddy Bergman, as a free event at McCarren Park Pool, one of the city’s best-loved concert and performance venues, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, beginning performances Friday, July 11, at 8pm and opening Thursday, July 24 at 8pm. The McCarren Park Pool is located on Lorimer Street at Bayard Street.

Twelve Ophelias centers on Hamlet’s Ophelia coming back to life, out of the water, to try to overcome her history and forge a new destiny for herself. She finds herself in an Appalachian Elsinore, Denmark by way of Deliverance—where Gertrude runs a brothel, Hamlet and Horatio slum it, and nothing is what it seems. In this squarely American and gritty interpretation of the Hamlet myth, Twelve Ophelias asks how it is possible to break old cycles and start afresh when the past so completely permeates your life.

The production follows on the heels of the Public Theater’s presentation of Hamlet in Central Park, creating an inter-borough dialogue—Hamlet’s in the Park, Ophelia’s in the Pool. Twelve Ophelias features a live and local rock/roots/bluegrass band, The Jones Street Boys (www.thejonesstreetboys.com), performing new original music, and showcases a host of talented young performers and designers.

CAST: Ben Beckley, Kate Benson, Pepper Binkley, Dan Cozzens, Jocelyn Kuritsky, Preston Martin, and Grace McLean.

CREW: Nicola Bullock (Choreography), Gabe Evansohn (Set), Emily Fishbaine (Musical Directors), Jessica Pabst (Costumes), Adam Rihacek (Fight Choreography), Jerad Schomer (Lights), and Ellen Shadburn (Stage Manager).

The production also highlights the McCarren Park Pool itself as a fascinating part of our urban landscape by placing the performers and audience amidst an Appalachian shanty-town installed inside the empty pool.

McCarren Park Pool was the eighth of eleven giant pools built by the Works Progress Administration to open during the summer of 1936. Mayor Fiorello La Guardia attended the dedication on July 31, 1936. With an original capacity for 6800 swimmers, the pool served as the summertime social hub for Greenpoint and Williamsburg. The building’s vast scale and dramatic arches, designed by Aymar Embury II, typify the generous and heroic spirit of New Deal architecture. The pool was closed in 1984 and in recent years has become a popular venue for live performances.

The Jones Street Boys make American music that is both contemporary and classic in its scope. Veterans of New York City’s roots music community, their debut album, Overcome, was released in October of 2007, which featured guest vocals from Jon Langford (Mekons/Waco Bros.) and received universally glowing reviews. They are currently recording a new album to be released in early 2009.

PRAISE FOR WOODSHED COLLECTIVE

NEVER THE SINNER

“Never the Sinner, just ended a crisp revival by the Woodshed Collective … director Gabriel Hainer Evansohn kept the action moving nicely … backed by a strong supporting cast and by Carl Faber’s excellent lighting, Teddy Bergman made a sympathetic Leopold.”
- Next Magazine

“Woodshed Collective’s version of the shocking story of killers Leopold and Loeb is enthralling…Never the Sinner is a powerful evening.”
- Duncan Pflaster, HX Magazine

“Woodshed Collective, in its production of John Logan’s Never the Sinner, transform(s) its audience into the jury that never was – from the stage plan, to the program, fashioned as a Chicago newspaper, (they) draw the audience into the fanatical fervor that surrounded the case.
- Backstage

“The Woodshed Collective’s revival of Never the Sinner reenacts the media frenzy the trial aroused … from every angle — even the production’s playbill is in a clever newspaper format. The four leads turn in first-rate performances. Bergman and Squibb actualize the complex relationship between Leopold and Loeb with terrific chemistry. … Never the Sinner successfully places its audience directly in the middle of this 1924 media circus.”
- Showbusiness Weekly

BLOOD WEDDING

“Woodshed Collective brilliantly executes this story of two families who become trapped in an unbreakable cycle off murder and revenge. Blood Wedding is a beautifully produced and…well acted evening of theater.”
-Show Business Weekly

Everything about Woodshed Collective’s new revival of Blood Wedding, Federico Garcia Lorca’s poetic tragedy, is striking…there’s eye catching imagery aplenty here. They know how to compose arresting, impressive stage pictures.”
–nytheatre.com

“There are many things to like in Woodshed’s production, not the least of which is Lillian Groag’s limpid new translation, which – especially in this ensemble’s naturalistic performance – lends a refreshing immediacy to Lorca’s prose.”
-Village Voice

“[Blood Wedding’s] climax is particularly breathtaking. The scene looks like a painting, and says more in a moment about the violence and hopelessness of the times…than pages of words.”

The JSB @ Mercury Lounge SUN 6/1

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Hello lovelies,

May, while it’s kept us away from the public eye, has been a busy month for the JSB.  We’ve been sifting and sorting, weighing ingredients, kneading and pulling, and cautiously feeding Danny to see if our experiments work (he’ll eat just about anything)!  We’ve been doing some great homecooking, perfecting a number of recipes we can’t wait to tell you about! We’re planning a big summer to share with you!!

But we’ll save those tales for another date.

And we know:  hiding away like that in our kitchens.  We’ve neglected you!

But no more: we’re back on the scene (insert James Brown reference here), and ready to tear up the Mercury Lounge stage this Sunday, 6/1.  Come on out and get a wee supermarket sampler of what we’ve been cooking up for your pleasure…

New LIVE Tracks / The JSB perform 4/9 and 4/10

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Hi all,

Just wanted to keep you, our lovely fans and friends, up to date on the latest in Jones Street Boys news.

First up, we’ve uploaded some live tracks from a Dec performance on Milwaukee’s favorite radio station WMSE. It’s a Myspace exclusive, so check out our barnburner version of “Last Time” and a tender rockin’ exclusive of “Slow Lights” a song that’s been a much beloved part our live show but hasn’t been available for you to listen to at home untill now. Which leads us to…

The JSB have been locked up throughout March with our thinking caps and typewriters running full-tilt as we compose the last delicious moments of our 2nd record. That’s right: the JSB will start recording in May! We’re so stoked to take our favorites from the live show (like “Slow Lights”) and these newly-birthed beauties and put them on tape for you to enjoy.

Can’t wait for the record to come out to hear what we’ve been cooking? We’ll be taking these newbies for a test drive as we venture out of our writing bubbles, strap back on our instruments, and take back the streets of New York. “Warriors… Come out to Plaaaayyy…” Come out on Wednesday 4/9 and Thursday 4/10 and have a listen. Yeah, it’ll be cool to see us play again, but that imperitive is really about us being selfish: it’s been too long and we miss you!!

We’ll be heading back to two different venues we’ve enjoyed in the past. Wednesday, 4/9 we’ll be performing in Alphabet City at Rehab (formerly Midway) @ 9pm with Max, The Antlers, and Ladyfingers ($8 cover). Then the following night we’ll be taking the stage at Williamsburg’s Soundfix with our friends in town from Tennessee, Those Darlins. They’ll be kicking off the free show @ 8pm. If we’re lucky, they’ll bring their stomp board with them and stomp all over your hearts!

Because March filled up so quickly with rain,

Blue and (hello) lonesome

Friday, February 15th, 2008

In honor of singles awareness day, we thought we’d share a story with ya’ll: So about 3 years ago, one of the Jones Street Boys was dating this real nice girl. He went to meet her for dinner one night, and as he arrived at the restaurant, he sees that she is talking to a friend of hers. This Jones Street Boy moseys on up with a big smile on his face. “Hey” says the real nice girl to her friend, “this is…um, this is…well, uh…”. Oh yes. She forgot his name. With his head hung low he went back home, but not before picking up a bottle of bourbon. Turns out that the same day, a pair of black Jack Purcells had arrived in the mail. He went upstairs, laced up his new sneaks, opened the bottle and promptly drank himself into blackout. The next morning, he opened his eyes, contacts plastered to corneas, shoes still looking slick, and saw that there was a mic plugged in to his sad little desktop Pro Tools recording rig and a guitar on the floor. He had, apparently, written a song. Today “Hello Lonesome” was featured on the homepage of the very cool Planetary Group http://www.planetarygroup.com/. You can check it out at our Myspace page.

The JSB 2.0 + Party @ Midway 2/9, 9:30pm

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Johnny 5. The Cylons. R2-D2. Hal. The Sentinals. K-9. Mecha-Streisand.

These famous robots have got nothing on us. We’re ever evolving and ever improving just like them! We’ve got a brand new Facebook page for you to peruse, our website is now fully interactive so you can leave comments on our blog about Sundance and anything else you’re feeling, and we’re learning to use our robotic proboscises to hack undetected into Diebold voting machines. What power!

OK. Maybe we’re not the best robots. Sometimes we cry alot. We’re really just 5 dudes who like to carve designs out of hair on our faces.

But we are nothing if not party machines. And this Saturday we’re going to throw down Birthday style: Aquarii unite!! In honor of the new grey hair on Walt’s head and the sudden dignified air that surrounds publicist Bonnie Hannah, we’re throwing them a show. I mean, we’re throwing them a party that’s really a show! Yipes.

Oh, and it’s free. Come tip a glass with us.

Sundanced

Friday, January 25th, 2008

So, we’re pretty sure that the Sundance Film Festival might be more appropriately called The ‘hey you, are you trying to sleep? seriously? good luck, sucker’…Festival. Don’t get us wrong, the beauty of Park City, the positive vibe on Main Street, the pizza at Red Banjo, and the astonishing population of creative artists are all overwhelming. But the exponential go-go-go is downright amazing. Thank heaven for bourbon and hot chocolate.

On Wednesday, we played a show at the Sidecar Bar for the fantastic folks of the environmentally wise Green Initiative, who not only put us up in an beautiful ski chateau with incredible views of the snow dusted Rockies, but also loaned us a car so we could haul our butts and gear around throughout Park City! Later in the day, after a round of beers and some pizza-pie that rivaled the best of NYC, we headed - along with our wonderful friends Caroline and JT - to play two sets for the New York Film Commission, who threw a HUGE party at a mansion in the mountains. This house was so gigantic and luxurious that it had a basketball court in the basement, mountain scenes carved into the doors, a full bar in the basement, and no less than 3000 square feet of deck space. Needless to say, we were floored. We played two long sets and put the party to sleep around 4AM when we hopped in a van and went bleary-eyed to the airport.

It was the most delightful whirlwind we’ve every been pummeled by.
