Hello lovelies,

May, while it’s kept us away from the public eye, has been a busy month for the JSB.  We’ve been sifting and sorting, weighing ingredients, kneading and pulling, and cautiously feeding Danny to see if our experiments work (he’ll eat just about anything)!  We’ve been doing some great homecooking, perfecting a number of recipes we can’t wait to tell you about! We’re planning a big summer to share with you!!

But we’ll save those tales for another date.

And we know:  hiding away like that in our kitchens.  We’ve neglected you!

But no more: we’re back on the scene (insert James Brown reference here), and ready to tear up the Mercury Lounge stage this Sunday, 6/1.  Come on out and get a wee supermarket sampler of what we’ve been cooking up for your pleasure…

The Jones Street Boys are officially back in action and will be performing this Friday on an amazing bill that includes Dawn Landes and Freedy Johnston. We’re super geeked to start off a night of great music at the one and only Housing Works as part of their benefit concert series Live from Home.

“The intimate setting of Live From Home provides both the audience and the artist with a unique and unforgettable experience. Funds raised from the concert series benefit Housing Works, which serves homeless New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS.”

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance on the Live from Home website or at the door.

Wait… What’s that you say?  You were saving your last $20 for ramen and peanut butter?  Pshaw!  Not only does that $20 cover get you a night of great music, but it gets you ALL THE BEER YOU CAN GUZZLE!!  And this ain’t no discothèque with a short little happy hour to get all of you pretty gazelles in the door.  The free beer will flow ALL NIGHT LONG.  Giddeeup.

Tomorrow: Wednesday, 4/9 we’ll be performing in Alphabet City at Rehab (formerly Midway) @ 9pm with Max, The Antlers, and Ladyfingers ($8 cover). So smooth…

Thursday 4/10: We’ll be taking the stage at Williamsburg’s Soundfix with our friends in town from Tennessee, Those Darlins for the first ever Bourbon and Ginger party. We’ll be kicking off the free show @ 8pm followed by Those Darlins and finishing off with the queens the of the folk circuit Aoife O’Donovan (Crooked Still) & Kristin Andreassen (Uncle Earl). It’s going to be a night of spectacular debauchery and uncommonly good country music.

Friday 4/18: The JSB kick off a night of toe tappin’ music at the hallowed Housing Works. The Jones Street Boys are honored to be part of a great lineup for Housing Works’ Live from Home event. We’ll get the party going @ 7:30pm followed by Dawn Landes and Freedy Johnston. Tickets are $20 and can be advance purchased HERE. Don’t miss it. We’re going to wear clean T-shirts and jeans for this one!!!

Saturday 4/26: The freaks come out at night and dance like ones possessed. We’ll be making those booties shake at midnight at Piano’s with our psychedelic friends from Atlanta, The Howlies.

Just wanted to keep you, our lovely fans and friends, up to date on the latest in Jones Street Boys news.

First up, we’ve uploaded some live tracks from a Dec performance on Milwaukee’s favorite radio station WMSE. It’s a Myspace exclusive, so check out our barnburner version of “Last Time” and a tender rockin’ exclusive of “Slow Lights” a song that’s been a much beloved part our live show but hasn’t been available for you to listen to at home untill now. Which leads us to…

The JSB have been locked up throughout March with our thinking caps and typewriters running full-tilt as we compose the last delicious moments of our 2nd record. That’s right: the JSB will start recording in May! We’re so stoked to take our favorites from the live show (like “Slow Lights”) and these newly-birthed beauties and put them on tape for you to enjoy.

Can’t wait for the record to come out to hear what we’ve been cooking? We’ll be taking these newbies for a test drive as we venture out of our writing bubbles, strap back on our instruments, and take back the streets of New York. “Warriors… Come out to Plaaaayyy…” Come out on Wednesday 4/9 and Thursday 4/10 and have a listen. Yeah, it’ll be cool to see us play again, but that imperitive is really about us being selfish: it’s been too long and we miss you!!

We’ll be heading back to two different venues we’ve enjoyed in the past. These famous robots have got nothing on us. We’re ever evolving and ever improving just like them! We’ve got a brand new Facebook page for you to peruse, our website is now fully interactive so you can leave comments on our blog about Sundance and anything else you’re feeling, and we’re learning to use our robotic proboscises to hack undetected into Diebold voting machines. What power!

OK. Maybe we’re not the best robots. Sometimes we cry alot. We’re really just 5 dudes who like to carve designs out of hair on our faces.

But we are nothing if not party machines. And this Saturday we’re going to throw down Birthday style: Aquarii unite!! In honor of the new grey hair on Walt’s head and the sudden dignified air that surrounds publicist Bonnie Hannah, we’re throwing them a show. I mean, we’re throwing them a party that’s really a show! Yipes.

Mark you calendars: it is sooooo on. The JSB invade The Mercury Lounge next Monday, 1/21 with our friends in Frauke for a night of relentless MLK day revelry. Don’t miss it as we strut our way through your favorite JSB tunes about heartache, headache, and “a lonely gay zombie searching for love and meaning in contemporary Berlin.”

OK fair enough. So we’ve never actually written a song about that last topic. We’re just practicing for our appearances at Sundance. The ever witty Amelie Gillette (writer of the Onion’s blog The Hater), has some great suggestions on how to make anything relevent and Sundance-appropriate. Check them out HERE.

We’re trying extra hard to be film-star cool as we’ll be traveling by plane the day after The Mercury Lounge gig to the land of ski and bunny to play a quaint little Redford festival called Sundance. If you’re in Utah, please come out and say hello as we’ll be playing a showcase at the Sidecar Bar in the afternoon, and then a knock em’ down, drag em’ out VIP party in the evening.

So the gist, boiled down and trimmed of verbose fat via an exceedingly expensive liposuction and lift procedure: Unless you’ll be in Utah on Wednesday, get thee to the Mercury Lounge on Monday 1/21.

I don’t think there’s any way this tour could have been more fun or have been improved in anyway. Not from my perspective. Admittedly though, by the time we got to Sunday, we were all seriously exhausted and slap happy. We split into two groups to drive to Dayton. JB and Jon took the band gear van and got an early start for Cincinnati where JB had found a great deal on a 2″ tape machine. (small aside: JB made my week - when they picked it up the guy he bought it from told JB that it was used to record the records of one of my favoritest bands ever: The Afghan Whigs!) Danny borrowed a car from his parents and he and Sam and I piled in an hour later and started the final drive for Dayton OH at the mercy of the 6 disc CD changer in the back of the car. At least we heard Sinead’s spectacular Prince cover “Nothing Compares 2 U”. That was the high point as we wandered between skippables like N-Sync, Backstreet Boys, and the truly curious disc “Menopause - The Musical.” The track “Stayin’ Awake” (Bee Gees re-written), was good for a laugh or twelve.  It was bitterly cold. Really the first inclement weather we’d encountered all tour (amazing, considering Milwaukee and Chicago were on the list in Dec). We were golden until we realized we’d accounted for seemingly everything but the time zone change. Whoops! Eh, The JSB were still the first ones at the venue, so what are you gonna do? Since we got there early, we had time to order a band pizza. We’re all spoiled by NY pizza, but this was something to blog about: Cheeseburger pizza. Instead of tomato sauce, ketchup and mustard were mixed, and it was topped with tomato, onion, bacon and pickles. Delicious!

We performed at the Canal Street Tavern, a venue I hadn’t been to since high school, when I saw Peter Mulvey perform there. It hadn’t changed a bit. Perfect place to close down the tour. The Umbrella Men had curated the bill and it was a great turnout for a couple of groups of hometown heros. The place was mobbed! My dad got up and gave a us a kind introduction, and then we tore through a final hoarse set, energy restored by the attentive crowd. When it was time to leave, I was the lucky one. Jon, Danny and Sam were driving back to St. Louis where they would find Monday’s transportation to the arms of their family. JB was taking the gear and the van back to NEW JERSEY(?!), driving as long as he could Sunday night, and finishing up the rest of the travel on Christmas Eve. I got off easy - my ‘rents took me home 45 minutes away and gave me clam-chowder and salad and bread and pie and a bed. Yes, a bed. Exhausted as we were, Danny’s father shared a a great story of how to stay awake when driving with an empty energy tank. He and his brother were driving late night to Arizona and falling asleep at the wheel, but apparently were unable to stop and rest. They developed this ingenious plan instead: whoever was driving rolled down their window and held a $100 bill out the window. Ya! No sleep till Brooklyn, indeed.

After being woken up by David’s dogs (thanks again David and Phylis!) we got going to my hometown, Chicago, and before I speak about the show, I have to tell you about something very important - JB’s very first Chicago Hot Dog…  So JB’s never had one of these beauties and for those of you who don’t know, all hot dogs in the world are gross compared to a Chicago dog.  First off, it’s an all beef dog with a steamed poppyseed bun, but then you pretty much have an entire garden of toppings on the dog (onions, relish, mustard, tomatoes, cucumbers, hot sport peppers, and finally, a crunch dill pickle spear and NO KETCHUP.)  Anyway, I took JB to one of my favorite spots in the city, Hot Doug’s, where not only do they make an amazing hot dog, but they also make their own insanely unique sausages (elk, venison, kangaroo, duck, etc.) but on Fri/Sat, they make their special duck fat fries (heavenly good.)  Here’s a photo of our feast - I got a blue cheese pork sausage with green apples, creme fraiche, and smoked almonds (no joke) it was the best thing ever) and JB finally ate his first Chicago hot dog!

So, onto the show… For the past 3 years, my brothers and I have thrown a holiday party in Chicago called “Deck The Hulls.”   It’s become a grand Hull family tradition - it consists of us inviting friends, dressing up in really bad holiday sweaters, and usually ending up at at Louie’s for karaoke and La Pasadita (the smallest one) for the best Horchata ever.

But this year, we’re on the road, so it seemed like a perfect fit for us to play the party…  The Beat Kitchen was PACKED with people and it was a blast!  While Danny and I have played Chicago a couple times as a duo, this was the first time my family and friends back home have seen The Jones Street Boys and it meant a lot to me…

To keep up with tradition, Sam and I rocked some really ugly holiday sweaters at the show – here are some live shots:

It also meant a lot that a one of the Chicago newspapers listed us as a concert pick for the night – ALONGSIDE R. KELLY!  The hilarity here is immeasurable on its own, but I really goes up a notch considering we’ve been watching the best video he’s ever made on YouTube lately – “Real Talk.”  Words can’t describe how completely ridiculously funny this is – if you haven’t already seen it, watch it here – I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard…
